Superbowl Sunday, McDonalds and Going back to South Africa

February 8th, 2010

Heeeeyyyyyy worrrrrld!!! How are you guys? Hope ya’ll got to watch our game against the Celtics Sunday afternoon before the Super Bowl came on. In that third quarter we played about as well as we have all season. I think somebody said we had a 19-0 stretch in that quarter that completely turned the game around.

Afterward everybody was asking me if that was a statement game for us because it was on national TV and it was the Celtics and it was in Boston and yad yada yada. But I think it was a statement to ourselves about how good we can be when we play together, talk on defense and share the ball like we did. When the ball is going in and out, that’s where we’re getting open shots and clean looks on the post. Hopefully, it was a learning game for us.

I know how everybody out there loves the commercials during the Super Bowl, so I hope ya’ll got to see my new McDonald’s commercial with LeBron just before the game came on.

It was pretty tight, huh??? Ya’ll like when ya boy rips the rim down and the backboard just explodes with glass everywhere? That was so much fun to make. I would love to do something like that during a game. I did shake the shot clock loose last year during a playoff game in Cleveland, but I’ve never shattered a backboard during a game. I’ve broken a few rims when I was in high school, but nothing like blowing up the backboard.

Something else for ya’ll to watch out for: Adidas is gonna send me to South Africa this summer to cover the World Cup as a member of the media. They want their basketball guys interviewing soccer players and mixing and matching the sports. I think it will be a lots of fun, but I’ve got to do a lot of research because I don’t know the first thing about soccer, ya’ll?

A fan at our game on Friday night gave me an autographed jersey from Brazil’s soccer team, but I don’t have a clue who it is. I still put it up on my wall of fame with all of the other jerseys that I have.

Well, we got another game Monday against New Orleans. Then, we’ll be in Chicago and Cleveland before the break. All ya’ll little homies watch out for me coming to a city near you. And then thanks to ya’ll’s votes, I’ll be in Big D over the weekend at the All-Star Game. It’s gonna be fun, and I’m looking forward to trying to give back to all of the fans who voted for me. Thanks, you guys.

I’m outta here. Peace out.

The story behind my left hand

February 3rd, 2010

Heyyyyyy worrrrrrld!!! What’s going on with your guys today? We got the day off on Wednesday after beating Milwaukee Tuesday night at home. It was our third game in four nights and we won them all.

We’ve won seven of the last eight and it really feels like we’re starting to gel as a team. It took us awhile, but I feel like we’re on our way to getting back to being a dominant team again. This stretch before the all-star game is really important and hopefully we can close out the next week or so with a lot of wins.

When I’m out and about in Orlando or in other cities a lot of fans and kids who play basketball ask me about how I developed such a good left hand. I really think that one of my best weapons is the fact that I can score just as well with my left hand as I can my right hand.

A lot of people don’t know it, but when I was growing up I was totally left-handed. I wrote left-handed, held a fork left-handed and shot the ball left-handed.

But when I was in the eighth grade I tried to dunk on a guy and he undercut me and I landed on my left hand and broke my left wrist. After that, I taught myself to write with my right hand, eat right-handed and shoot the basketball with my right hand.

Little did I know back then that something like hurting my wrist as a kid would help me as a NBA player.

I made three straight left-handed hook shots on Tuesday against Milwaukee when the double-team came from the top side. Then, in the second half when they didn’t double team I could get to the middle of the lane and get to my right-handed hook shot.

Being able to score with either hand helps me against some of these other big guys and it helps me turn away from the double-teams and those little dudes digging down on me.

I’ve just got to keep working on my game and getting better every day. On Tuesday, I stayed after practice almost an hour, working on my free throws and my jump shots with Patrick Ewing. I’m working on shots from 15 to 17 feet to give me another option when teams start double-teaming me down low. I’ll always be a post-up player, but it’s good to have other options like a jump shot or a left-handed hook to make you a better player.

Well, that’s the story about my left hand. All you young kids out there, you’ve gotta work both hands to make yourself a more dangerous player. And you’ve got to live in the gym and put in the time. That’s how I’ve gotten to where I am now.

I’m outta here. Ya’ll be good.

McDonald’s Announces Contract Renewal with NBA All-Star Dwight Howard

February 2nd, 2010

McDonald’s® Announces Contract Renewal with NBA All-star Dwight Howard

Howard to Star in Remake of Classic Super Bowl Commercial with LeBron James and NBA Legend Larry Bird

OAK BROOK, Ill. (Feb. 2, 2010) – McDonald’s confirmed today NBA All-Star Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic has renewed a multi-year agreement with the company, extending a relationship that dates back to 2008.  Although financial details of the contract will not be disclosed publicly, Howard’s agreement includes support of several McDonald’s programs, promotions and other initiatives in coming months. This month, Howard will back McDonald’s sponsorship of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. Howard was a member of the 2008 gold-medal U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team.

Howard and LeBron James, both McDonald’s All Americans, will star in a remake of the iconic 1993 Super Bowl commercial “The Showdown,” which is set to air just before Super Bowl® XLIV kicks off on Feb. 7. An excerpt from the commercial can be seen on YouTube: www.youtube.com/McdonaldsAllAmerican.

The new commercial titled “Check This” will pit the NBA Eastern Conference rivals against each other in their own unique take on the battle for a Big Mac® sandwich. The TV ad will also feature the reappearance of NBA legend, Larry Bird.  Joe Pytka, commercial director for McDonald’s original 1993 Super Bowl spot, also filmed the latest remake.

“Dwight has been a champion for his team, his community and McDonald’s since we entered into a relationship with him in 2008,” said Neil Golden, McDonald’s USA chief marketing officer. “We are excited to bring Dwight and LeBron – two of the biggest names in basketball today – together for the remake of this iconic commercial, the first of many opportunities to come.”

“I have tremendous respect for the McDonald’s brand and I look forward to continuing my relationship with the company and expanding my involvement in their programs,” said Howard.  “I can’t wait for the new commercial to debut on Super Bowl Sunday. The fans are going to love it.”

“Although McDonald’s officially brought Dwight on board as a spokesman three years ago, the loyalty of this relationship unofficially dates back 21 years,” said Eric Goodwin, President, GSM.  “Dwight’s fondest memories are his first ‘Happy Meal’ and playing in the McDonald’s All American Game.  There isn’t a more authentic partnership than this.”

In addition to marketing promotions, Howard will support the 2010 McDonald’s All American High School Basketball Games in Columbus, Ohio, benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Central Ohio. In 2004, Howard earned McDonald’s All American Game co-MVP and Player-of-the-Year honors in Oklahoma City. He has served on the McDonald’s All American Advisory Council since 2008.
