Keeping calm on the court

Heyyyyyy world!!!! We got a good win last night against Indy, but we had to scrap back into the game after a slow start. I think we were still on West Coast time because our bodies are still getting used to being back at home in Florida. Thank goodness, we’ve got a stretch of days here at home and we can actually sleep in our own beds for a while because we have been on the road for so long now.

By now, I’m sure everybody out there has already seen what happened with the hard fouls that I got from the Pacers last night. I’m not here to complain about it because I just think they were trying to hand out hard fouls to keep me from scoring and I was just out there playing hard trying to help my team win.

Even when they take their shots, I’ve just got to stay calm. Guys are going to do whatever they can to get me frustrated. I’ve just got to do my best to stay cool. My team needs me on the floor, and I understand that.

It’s tough at times when you get hit down there. I think sometimes people that just because I’m a big guy that I should never complain about getting hit the way that I do. I’m not trying to complain, but those do add up and they hurt sometimes.

I’ve been getting hit up high a lot lately, but you can get hurt when you get hut anywhere. It’s really physical down there in the paint, but I’m just going to keep playing through it and try not to get frustrated.

I just have to realize what’s important and that’s my team needing me on the floor so that we can win games. All I can really control right now is my anger and I’m going to do everything in my power to stay calm and not get frustrated. It’s like if I give them a reaction then they win and I don’t want that to happen.

I talked to some of those Indy players out there on the floor and they all said the same thing about not trying to hurt me out there on the floor. They’re just trying to make sure I don’t score, but I can’t get frustrated when they do foul me. If they don’t foul me they know I’m going to finish the play. And if they do foul me, I just have to play through it.

I just think that everything happens for a reason, and if I can get through something like this frustration free and injury free hopefully I’ll be holding that gold ball up at the end. Maybe all of this stuff is happening for a reason and I’m being tested.

I have no worries or complaints because I’ll get through this. I’m really trying to be patient and mature about the whole thing, and I just hope it all pays off in the long run.

Take care ya’ll. I’m outta here. Yuuuuuuuuaaaah!!!

    No Doubt!

I feel you on this. Murphy hacked you up high, he put his hands out for a shake, you was like, “Naw Homie, You better back up.”

I played sports against my boys on other teams. 48 minutes. If you did not have my colors on. You were the enemy. You were treated like an enemy.

afterwards if you’re mature and grown enough we will be boys at the end.

  3. VT says:

Your frustrations should be focused on making your shots at the foul line. That’s how you can vent! Success to you Dwight!

  4. LaTasha says:

Most might think get use to it…it’s all apart of the game. However your right. You’re human and of course you have feelings and emotions that are going to reflect in the game. And like you said maybe it’s just a test from God possibly working patience in you or something-else. The fact of the matter when you believe in God is that you know all things are working together for your good. My advice if your listening would be to begin each game with a new mind set. The bible says create in me a clean heart and renew a right, persevering and steadfast spirit within me. Enjoy each and ever challenge you must face and trust in the Lord. He will be your refuge! Last but not least read 2Peter1:5-8. It bascially confirms the test your talking about. The word says that a person will die for lack of discipline and instruction. Discipline is not for sale but you Mr. Howard have the inner ability to develop self-control. By spending time with God and being filled with his spirit and his power you’ll live and play a calm life with a well-balanced mind of discipline and self-control. Give God the control…..good luck!!! Blessings.

Players always seem to do a little “EXTRA” to try to defend you. They figure you’re just unstoppable. Glad to see you’re handling things like the champion that you are. But if you say the word, I can be your bodyguard (lol) Have a great day.

  6. CJ says:

Polish Hammer needs to start knocking down the opposing team players when this happens Dwight. enough is enough. time to get nasty

  7. Terez MCafee says:

We all go through seasons of difficulty that can sometimes feel overwhelming. But during these times, we have to remember that Almighty God is greater than the struggle we face! He’ll take those challenges and use them to strengthen us, but we have to do our part and get into agreement with Him
Say this prayer with me Dwight: Heavenly Father, thank You for the strength to make it through any challenge I may face. I choose to put my trust in You. I declare that You are good and thank You for working behind the scenes on my behalf. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

I hope this help and please remember stay encourage no matter what your going through God will make it alright! Love YA…

  8. melanie says:

YES! first off, congrats on the win. It must feel good from the previous games. I used to get fouled purposely all the time in the paint. So I know how it can be. What I took it as was a compliment. I was getting fouled, like you are, because I was a threat to the other team. So i just used that energy to play through them as best as I can. My team needed me so I tried not to let those fouls get to me. When teams did double team me or play overly aggressive to prevent me form scoring I helped my team in other ways also, like finding the open player and drawing defenders. Teams didn’t know what to do at that point lol. Just keep your cool and find other ways to help your team. They need you! :]

    Melanie.

  9. LaJoi P. says:

    Dwight:

Pray’n 4U! Keep your Joy during the trials & the testing. Everything you go through takes you to the word, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work (that gold ball at the end) so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom (even in frustration), he should ask God, who gives generously to all , and it will be given to him” (James 1:2-5).

Often times we have to encourage ourselves. If you get a chance read all of Chapter 1 in the book of James, it will speak 2U.

Keep doing your thing dude, God got U!

    In Him,
    LaJoi P.

yes yes yes, I totally agree with you that everything happens for a reason.
And YES, I am so happy that we WON last nite:)
Keep up the good work and I cannot wait to see your play again on Wednesday<3<3
Its nice and hot again in Orlando and I am very glad to have you back home with us!!!!!!!
GO MAGIC!!!!!!!!! and I <3 youuuuu:)

Good blog Dwight! Keep risin’! :)

  13. rachakaloislane says:

Maybe if you started handing out some hard fouls of your own to the one’s who hand them out to you, they might think twice about doing it the next time. I’ve seen guys run into you and hit the floor an you didn’t budge! I bet that hurt!!! Just don’t make it a flagrant foul, ooh!! I would not want to be on the other end of one of those from you!…lol If you can learn to be patience through the fouls, it might help you to be patient in other areas too. All things work together for the good of them who love God. I enjoy watching you play. Peace and Love baby! ;)

Good game Dwight. I wish other atheletes would follow your mind set. Getting frustrated is only following their game plan. They can’t stop you physically’ so they try mentally. Instead of getting upset, smile and say “thanks for the free 2 points” then you’ll get into their heads.Keep up the good work. God is truly blessing you for blessing others. GO MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. djh says:

I must say that I am so impressed with you as a person. You went from being frustrated and taken out of your game to understanding the problem and providing a solution that benefits you, your team and us die hard bball fans. I like the spritual comments provided by your fans and I’d like to add one more, if you don’t mind. Ephesians 4:26,27 states “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil.” Proverbs 16:32 states “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city”. Anger is a natural emotion, but what you do with that anger separates you from the world. Just think what could have happened if you responded like Ben Wallace did against Indiana a few years ago? Everything does happen for a reason and I think the reason is to prepare you for what you will face in the playoffs. By that time, you’ll be a seasoned vet on how to handle Hack-a-Howard… as long as you keep making your free throws. ;)

  16. MagicAintScared says:

Hi Dwight, congrats on last night’s win! I hate that players feel the need to stop you by any means necessary but like you said, if they don’t foul ridiculously hard, you’re going to finish and that’s awesome. The good in all of this is that Van Gundy has spoken up and so 1 of 2 things should happen. Either players will be called for the flagrant and you and the Magic will get a little something extra (FTs & possession) or players will foul you properly (going strictly for the ball). I can’t imagine the refs letting such wild play continue–IF THEY DO, be sure to body slam those guards that constantly throw themselves at you. At that point, somethings got to give right? Anyway, I know you won’t get into that tit-for-tat dirty play I was just kidding. I am however, glad that you look to put the team first and are smart enough to know that they need you on the court. You and the guys keep ATTACKING THE RIM and good luck against Toronto on Wednesday!!!

  17. Ade'nike' Wright says:

    Hey D-rock,
Sitting court side while blocking the people behind me with my afro LOL! I saw your pain and I must admit I was VERY up set that Indy kept pouncing on you, and you didn’t control yourself, but its all good, you live and learn right? and yes other teams will try to get you to that emotional level again. I stay take a seat for a moment regain your control and get back in. Your in my prayers, stay sweet, be humble and God bless.

  18. Cliff Higgins says:

Dwight I am sure you have heard about hack and shaq.
Well we can call this Hack and Dwight. However coach can help you out by having Gortat play the first quarter in each game. The fan’s can clearly see what is going on.

Also last night sorry Dwight. I must differ with you that wasn’t a good win 8-13 team should be blown out of the Amyway arena. But we love you keep up the work. We win the game, but with grave difficulties.

  19. I’m glad to see that you are understanding what is going on.I knew that you were an intelligent and mature man and you would figure it out.I know it is tough when you try to preserve your body and youth by not smoking, drinking or doing drugs and then you feel like other people are wearing your body down.Hopefully something will be done soon. Try not to stress good always prevails in the end.

  20. Mark says:

    Dwight,

You are definitely an inspiration and a lot of people (including myself) look up to you. I’m not sure where you have to go to mentally, but you got to turn on that dominate switch. Think back to last year’s series vs. the cavs, you turned on the “Rocky” switch. It didnt matter if they threw all 5 players at you, you were still gonna dunk it on them. You have to bring that determination, find it again. Because when you can control that, Dwight, you will be one of the best players to ever play. You are doing an excellent job though and everyone here in Orlando loves you man! Keep up that drive, keep up that determination.

  21. TK says:

i feel u D-12. the refs lettin u get beat up doen on the block. keep ya head on straight like u been doin and dominate. they realize u cant be stopped so they try to do whateva is possible to slow u down. STAY STRONG STAY DOMINANT!!! STAY STRONG D-12!! HOLLA!!!

  22. MagicPhan says:

How to beat the hard foul problem: Everyone says that all D12 needs to do in order to stop the hard fouls is raise his FT % to 70 or so. Easier said than done, because he has to shoot a soft, fluid floater with an arc only seconds after 3 huge men were hanging off his arms and knocking him around. So he has to shoot most of his FT’s while his muscles are still in “combat” mode.

Maybe this would work: During practice, take dumbells to the free-throw line. Work the muscles up. Shoot some baskets. Lift the weights some more. Shoot some baskets. Otherwise, Dwight isn’t practicing the game that he actually plays. How often does he get to the line when his arms are relaxed? Rarely. But in practice when he makes 20 in a row, his arms are always relaxed.

    I love this team.

  23. Kobe says:

yo superman, keep playin hard, im a lakers fan but ur one of my favorite big men in the league, keep doing what you do i wanna see u get that defensive player of the year award again

  24. Alicia Jackson says:

Hi Dwight, Congrats on the win…I hear ya, and totally understand what your going through. Your so big and strong that those defenders feel, they can be rough with you and hack. Your shoulders are big and your called “A Beast” but you dont want to be attacked like that. I didnt see the game and what happened yesterday, but good thing you kept your cool and was calm.

Dont retaliate, people like that will get theirs in the end. Your the bigger person when you just turn the other cheek and do your job and thats to be the best Center in the league..Your numbers are showing that. Congrats on your 26th 20/20 Game.

Just keep focused, dont let that hinder you from winning the championship. We will be rooting for you all the way to the Playoffs..Your the best…

HEY BABY CONGRADS ON LAST NIGHTS WIN WELL IM NOT GOING TO SAY TO MUCH 2NIGHT SENSE EVERYONE ELSE PRETTY MUCH TOUCHED ALL OF THE BASICS. BUT SADLY HUNEY I WAS ONE OF THOSE PPL THAT THOUGHT YOU WERE TO BIG TO GET HURT—–SORRY I GUESS THAT IS A PRETTY REDICULOUS ASUMPTION AND IM SORRY THAT YOU HAVE TO ENDURE SUCH AGGRESSIVNESS BC OF IT. LATASHA SAID IT BETTER THEN ANYONE SOMETIMES THINGS DON’T GO HOW WE WANT BUT YET STILL WE HAVE TO KEEP OUR HEADS UP AND CHESTS OUT TRUST AND BELIEVE THAT GOD WILL SEE YOU THROUGH. ALWAYS DO UR BEST AND WALK UPRIGHT AND IT WILL ALL PAY OFF IN THE END—–STAY SWEET AND REMEMBER THAT GOD DOESN’T GIVE US PATIENCE YET HE GIVES US THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE PATIENT I LOVE YOU BABY GOOD LUCK~~

  27. Adolfo says:

The best you can do is raise your FT average… by this way you’ll hurt them even more ’cause you’ll get them in foul troubles and with points!!! Don’t you worry D-Man we are with you…!!! If doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger…!!! Make’em pay Superman…!!!

  28. Brownruth says:

You guys are tough! Glad you guys bounced back. yes it seems they always try to hit you w/hard fouls. I guess one way to look at is if you weren’t any good and couldn’t score they wouldn’t be double teaming you and trying to foul you all the time. It says a lot about the kind of player you are. You are a threat to them so……
Keep up the good work! Stay focused ! God Bless Mighty Dwighty (lol!!!).

  29. Philippa says:

Hey Dwight, I saw a replay of the game and yea it did look that you took a lot of hacks…but i guess that is all apart of the game esp. since you are a center and unfortunately that comes along with the territory…Eventhough the one where one of the guys almost got your neck was kinda uncalled for, but i guess that it was not intentional. Eitherway you guys got the win and hope you guys win next game.
    Bye.

  30. Keep your head up and stay strong. Take out your frustrations in the weight room. Again, I’m highly annoyed by the “yuuuuuahhh”, but it’s your blog, do what you do, sir.

  35. Crowderpeas27 says:

    Keep up the good work!

  36. DJG says:

Focus on the big prize at the end of all of it. Take a breath and not the technical. We can’t afford to lose you for even one game. Turn your emotions into pay-back with knocking down the free throws. Keep the focus on what this thing is all about — Winning the championship.

  37. Efrain Salas says:

I’d say knock ‘em out but being Christian I can’t. I’ve been in a few similar situations and I’ve learned to have patience. I’ts not easy but you’ll feel better. Have faith my brother, I think something will be done in the future I’m going to pray for you

  38. J the Drafter says:

This is way off-topic but it’s a suggestion people had for handling guards that fly in and make contact with you. Take a charge. Talk to the coaching staff, or Redick, or Gortat if you need to get your form right, and the next time a guard goes at you directly, take the charge.

  39. betty song says:

LOVE YOU !!!GO ON !BEAT HEAT TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  40. I know you have been treated badly lately, but you are doing great job on keeping clam, we can see it,Dwight!!! I love the way you play against this unfair things, you are such a great model. God will be with you all the time.
