Learning another lesson

Heyyyyyy wooorrrrrrlllld!!! Hope ya’ll are OK there here in America and around the world. We were in Houston last night and I’ve gotta say I’m so impressed with how there are more and more Magic jerseys in the crowd than ever before. When me and Jameer came to Orlando, we talked about how we were going to make Orlando be known for more than Disney World, and I’d like to think we’re doing out little part now spreading the Magic name.

Last night’s game was crazy, ya’ll!!! Before the game, the media and my teammates were all telling me about how I could set the Magic record for the most double-doubles in a row. Then, I go out there and get two fouls in 22 seconds!!! I was so mad at myself because I thought I had messed up my chance at getting the record. Ya’ll know that I’m all about winning, but it was pretty cool to have a chance to do something that nobody in a Magic uniform has ever done.

But when I got back in the game, I just made up my mind that I was gonna be aggressive on both ends of the floor and let the chips fall wherever they may. I wasn’t gonna let the early fouls take me out of attack mode or staying hungry.

And that worked ‘cause it helped me play really well and it helped us get a huge lead on the Rockets. We slipped up some in the second half and let them get back in the game, but I really think we had it the whole way.

I try to learn something from every single game ‘cause I’m still kind of a young player in this league and what I will take out of that Houston game is that just because I get off to a bad start or get a few early fouls it doesn’t mean I can’t still have a big night. And I have to remember that just because I get a couple of fouls that I can’t let it affect my mindset. It still has to be attack, attack, attack!!!

Not sure if you guys saw it or not, but Vince Carter broke my record for the longest shot while sitting down earlier this week. I can’t believe he got some run on SportsCenter by making that shot. Here’s kind of what happened if you didn’t see the video.

After getting up shots and free throws with Patrick Ewing, I started playing around with one of our ballboys, seeing if I could make a sitting-down shot from the other free throw line. After a few minutes of doing it, Vince joined in. I hit the backboard a couple of times, then hit the rim and got so close to making the shot.

WE realized we were actually too close and backed up a few more feet. Not sure if people realize how hard it is to throw a basketball 86 feet without your legs!!! I had a couple that were on line and I really thought they were going in … and then VC went and made one. It was crazy.

I know I’ll never hear the end of it from him now. He was telling me that he was better at it because he used to be a quarterback in middle school. They measured his shot at 86 feet, so now I’ve got something to shoot for because I know I can make that shot, too.

It’s just something silly we do from time to time to help us get through a long season. And we’re all so competitive and something like that really gets me going.

I like the flow we have going right now as a team, and I think we’re starting to peak at the right time. We just have to finish the regular season strong and then hit the playoffs firing on all cylinders!!! We do that and that ‘chip will be ours this year.

Take care, y’all!!!

I think it’s so honorable of you to write a blog reflecting on the lessons you’ve learned from your games. It seems like some athletes think they know it all so they don’t need to work harder or reflect. As a teacher, I’m beginning to realize how important this is. It’s the best and most humbling road to progression. Dwight, you are one of a kind! Many blessings!

I think you’re awesome Dwight, but I doubt that would have happened if my boy Yao was still in the lineup! Enjoy dominating H-town while you can!

VC’s shot doesn’t count because the Guinness record people weren’t there… Lol

We’re never too old to learn. I really enjoyed this blog. You inspire so many of us to continue to work harder to perfect the gifts we have been given. Thank God for you. Continue to be that inspiration.

  5. Rontora says:

So I think you have improved so much. Not that you were not a good player but because you are starting to play the way we all know you can. I always wonder if you really read these or if we are writing just for the heck of it. I don’t know. What I do know though is that you sir are a very talent guy. Keep being aggressive because if you do no one can touch you. I think if guys keep playing the way you are there is no doubt in my mind that Magic’s will be on top for years to come. Congrats again on your big night. I am so proud of my team. MAGICS ALL THE WAY!!!!! Stay focused. Keep your eyes on the prize. And don’t forget us left hander’s are a force to be reckoned with. God Bless you!!!!

  6. Mugazia says:

Hey Dwight, I would like to thank you for sharing your life lessons. You are such an inspirational athlete. I admire you on and off the court. You play with such a fun attitude that makes everyone wish they had you as a team mate. I wish you all the best and stay blessed. Keep doing you and the ring will be yours this yr. PEACE!!!

  7. Sen says:

I didn’t see the game…but you didn’t say in the blog if you broke the record or not…so did you end up getting another double?

I went to college on a basketball scholarship and to me the most important half is the 2nd half. So no matter what happens in the first few mins of the game, you have to remember that you already fouled so there is no point in harping on it since you can no longer control it, you still have a whole other half to play which is in your control to change. You have really grown since your first game in the league and even though you don’t know me and I don’t know you, I am proud of you. Keep developing your skills, next thing you know the big man will be bring it down the court and shooting 3’s. LOL!!

Sorry for the long comment, but there is one more thing I want to say. I watched your NBA story and there are a couple of things that you said, that I really like and now I do it every day. You said to write your goals “write it down make it plain for the world to see and it will be accomplished”. You also said “faith without works is dead” have faith but put in the work to get your goals accomplished.

  8. Alicia Jackson says:

Hi Dwight, even though you got those fouls in the game. You still did great and got another double/double.
You are playing very well and really progressing and turning heads. Patrick Ewing is your teacher and hes really helping with your moves and you are looking great on the court. Just keep on progressing
and improving your game and we will be rooting for you..That was a good shot that Vince did, you guys look like you have alot of fun as a team and work well together..That shot was longer then yours, the Guiness people wasnt there to record it..its on tape so he can send it and get acknowledgment. The season is winding down and its gonna be the playoffs and this is the best part of the season.
So just stay focused and keep learning because its gonna be more lessons you will have to learn. Everyday we learn something new about ourselves and others and all we can do is not do it again. We love U

heyyyy SuperMan CONGRATS!!! once again on an outstanding ball game lastnight yall was determined to get that W and you guys never lost focus it was a good game to watch well…. besides JJ having an unusually off night tell him to rest up n im sure he will be fine oh yea also he does not HAVE TO make all 3’s and just relax :-)
Dwight all jokes aside… you have evolved into such an amazing player in your 6 season’s it’s scary lol i mean im SO PROUD of you breaking and setting records, how you raise the bar for our generation im just happy to be in your age group no lie. to me you are the greatest there is nothing superman can not do you will always have ppl like VC making you continue to raise that bar we need them along the way to keep us moving up ya know continue to reach for the stars just like i will continue to reach for you :-) thru Christ all things are possible know that and own it I LOVE YOU peace and blessings to you~~

  10. That’s okay youngblood my teens tease me about being old but most of the time people think they are my siblings.I’m not threatened by the young women out there cause I look younger than most of them.Tell Vince I don’t drink but I heard were like a fine wine we get better with time.Enough of that you’ll think I’m conceited. Its good you go away with a lesson after every game. That shows your maturity.Congragulations on your record.I like seeing you have fun.Don’t listen to the facebook people about the Mcnuggets causing obesity.Like my grandmother said people always making excuses for their bad habits instead of trying to change the situation.Keep being happy sweet Dwight and keep sharing your ups and downs with those of us that care.

  11. djh says:

Heeeeyyyyy Dwight! All of those trials you had earlier this season have molded your game into something pretty spectacular. You are making your free throws, you broke Shaq’s record and recorded Wilt Chamberlin statistics. You said you wanted to be like Wilt! However, we know this is just the beginning.

Next hurdle, how to get a team of good guys to develop a killer instinct that won’t let an opponent come back from a large deficit. Any suggestions? :)

  12. Dwight I can’t get a refund once I buy the tickets please be calm. Please Please Please and I don’t beg but I’m doing it now.

Keep being the Blessing that U are inspiration is n and all over U never let it go. As always continually praying Gods Blessing upon U Be Blessed Mr. DH

    Hey Dwight,
Congrats on the win against the Houston Rockets! I was sooo excited to have floor seats to last nights game. It was an amazing game but what was even more amazing was how you got two fouls as fast as you did ..lol, but you more than made up for that! I just wanted to thank you against for taking the time to meet me and take pictures with me. You have no idea how much that meant to me. I truly hope you liked your gift in the blue bag!

    Your biggest fan,
    Terez Mcafee

  15. Roli says:

Since VC’s shot was during practice, that’s ok….right?lol. What I would say to you is don’t let the fame of doing something extraordinary or breaking some record get to you….as you have seen, it will break your focus. Walk the straight and narrow; stay true to what you are committed to….in otherwords, stay focused on the goal of winning the championship and put in your best (like you always do) at every game. Breaking a record will come out of the hard work, dedication and committment you put in and out of the court; and not necessarily when you go after it……that’s what makes it extraordinary. God bless you, Dwight …… and don’t stop smiling!

  16. Tasha says:

~*HEEEYYY DWIGHT!!!.. WHAT’S GOIN ON HOMIE?!?!.. CONGRATS ON THAT WIN AGAINST HOUSTON!!!.. y’all played good last night but i just wanna say thank you for writing these blogs because not only do they allow me (and the fans, i guess.. lol) to see your thoughts and input on different things, it also allows me to see that your mature.. grateful.. kind.. inspiring.. loving.. caring.. and so much more that its like a breath of fresh air.. you know??.. its wonderful to read your blogs because they allow us to see who GOD HAS MADE YOU TO BE.. HE made you into such a great person that your inspiration is inspiring others, especially our youth.. you know??.. its like our youth today needs inspiration and encouragement to do what they want to do when they get older.. you know??.. and that’s where we, as adults, encourage our youth because unfortunately they don’t get that motivation in their home.. and that’s sad.. so thank you for setting that example for the children..

But I also want to thank you for your words of wisdom in this blog.. learning life lessons, in my eyes, are the BEST lessons I’ve learned.. I may be only 22 but I have learned A LOT.. those lessons have taught me not to give up on myself.. to keep going because GOD has something great for me.. to love myself.. to believe in myself.. and much more.. you know??.. but all of my life lessons has taught me so much about myself that i’m able to encourage and inspire and motivate my friends around me.. you know??.. yes, sometimes my friends shed tears when they come to me for advice but that’s okay because i know this is the person who GOD wants me to be.. HE wants me to be there for those who are not strong enough to handle something.. HE wants me to be their backbone because they don’t have one.. HE wants me to NEVER give up on them even if they have given up on themselves.. you know??.. and even if I haven’t been through something and my friends have, GOD still allows me to learn from their mistakes also and still be that encouragement that they need.. but being my friends “go to perosn” means so much to me because at the end of it all i feel good because i’ve helped someone keep going and going and going.. you know??.. and just like how you didn’t allow those fouls at the beginning of the game let you lose focus, i can’t lose focus on why GOD has me here.. you know??.. so i have to keep smiling and being there for those who depend on me to get them through because that’s what GOD’s expecting from me.. you know??..

But i know I probably talked your ear off but I just wanted to tell you thank you for your encouragement and ALWAYS KEEP GOD FIRST IN EVERYTHING YOU DO..but keep doin what you doin and remember.. GOD LOVES YOU AND I LOVE YOU TOO :-) *~

**p.s. i just set up a Twitter account and wanted to know if you would follow me.. now i’m letting you know, i might not be that interesting.. lol.. but it would mean a lot to me**

  23. Mrs. S. Bellamy says:

Dwight DH, I think that it is totally awesome how you post your lessons learned with each game. It is truly an inspiration for my boys. I have two sons, one 15 years old and the other is a 20 year old paraplegic! I can teach them a lot of things at home but it is also great for them to hear lesson from others. A lesson coming from you is an honor. Both boys love the sport of basketball and participate in organized games. My Son Cornelious (CJ) plays for the Orlando Magic Wheelchair league now. Before he was shot he played high school basketball and was a great athlete. He needs someone like you to help him keep a level head to continue in life, to remind him that he can always continue he game. Chris plays for a local high school in the 9th grade and has a lot to learn. *Life does have a purpose!*
    I do believe in Magic!

  24. Deborah says:

Hey Dwight! I was at that game last night! :D I’m a huge huge Rocket’s fan, and love my team like crazy, but it was still really cool too see you last night, you dominated. (I saw an article that last night you put up Wilt Chamberlain stats!! WOW!)

But anyway, good luck to my favorite non-Rocket ;) and your team, I hope y’all win the Eastern conference and BEAT THE LAKERS! (or whoever is in the Finals this year lol) ttul!!

  25. Rickyll says:

Heeeyyy! Dwight I was there to witness that win last night and sat right beside you. You made my day. I told myself that i would have to see you play at least once in my life, so I bought myself the ticket for my birthday. It was great seeing you. Good game hon!!!!

  26. Dwight I didn’t mean anything bad when I was talking about looking younger than most young women.I am not a fan of Shaq and I really haven’t seen Vince play until he came to Orlando but when the facebook people keep calling them old I get my back up because I am older than them 40.My point was if you don’t do drugs drink smoke overeat or let people stress and don’t wear all that makeup you can stay looking young and healthy. You can be a natural God given beauty.Dwight don’t let people run you ragged.Take some time for yourself.Say no to some people because they will take every ounce of energy you have.If someone truly loves you they will understand that you have to take time for Dwight.I like what Bill said about take time to rejuvenate your mind for a month or so after the season. You should do this during the season to even if only for a day.I just want you to stay healthy happy and strong.

  27. Fran - Orlando says:

My birthday was Feb. 20 and everyone asked what I wanted, I told them, for us to beat the Cavs, and we did so thanks for the b’day gift. Wonder what you think of the trades that Cleveland and Boston made??

    Dwight,

I think it’s great that you are still trying to advance your game and learn lessons from each game you play.

Even though I’m from LA, I wanted to say “a good game well deserved”. If you win the championship this year, it will be well deserved. I see the fire in your eyes how bad you want the championship this year. Maybe we will cross paths next year at the all stars here in LA next year! Take care…
