Working out with Hakeem “The Dream”

Heeeeyyyyy worrrrrrrrrlddddd!!! How is everybody out there doing???

I’m good, finally recovering after what happened against the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. It’s still tough for me to think about, us losing and falling short of that ‘chip that we wanted to win for all of the Magic fans.

Gotta tell you guys that I haven’t been able to watch one game in the Finals yet. I can’t really watch it at all. Every time I turn on the TV and I see a Celtic or a Laker I kind of get ticked off. Sorry, that’s just the way that I feel.

I wanted to tell you guys about what I was doing last week. I’m not just sitting around and feeling sorry for myself about losing to Boston. I decided to get back to work on my game immediately, so I went to Houston to work out with Hall of Fame center Hakeem “The Dream’’ Olajuwon. We worked three hours a day for five days last week.

Let me tell you, Hakeem is 47 years old, but that guy is still in really good shape. I started to call Otis Smith up and tell him to sign Hakeem to a contract because I really think he could give us 12 to 15 minutes a night off the bench.

He has so much knowledge about playing in the post and I’m just trying to be a sponge and soak up everything that he teaches me. Some of it is stuff that we already work on in practice every day, so it’s just a matter of me working on it more and more.

But Hakeem showed me some things with footwork and shots off fakes to get free. He was always so patient in the post and it was like he had defenders on a string with his moves. So I’m just trying to pick up as much as I can from him.

Hakeem had the Dream Shake, but mine is going to be the Milk Shake. I’ve got a lot of drills and moves from Hakeem to work on all summer, and it’s just about taking them to the game now. Hopefully, I will get to work out with Hakeem again in August when I’m in Africa visiting for Basketball Without Borders. And we might get to see one another in Houston again before training camp.

So I’m doing everything that I can to stay busy this summer and keep my mind off the Finals. We had a really cool event on Sunday at Altamonte Springs for the Special Olympics. I got to bowl my guy, Big Bubba, who I met a few weeks ago when I was bowling at Altamonte Lanes. We had a lot of fun with the kids and of course I rolled a few strikes along the way. I didn’t have my personal bowling balls, but I still showed my bowling skills. And all of the kids laughed a lot and had fun.

Got a lot of trips coming up this summer. I’ll be in LA, China (twice) and Africa. Gonna do a movie in China, gonna make a kids’ album, make an appearance on Suite Life with Zack and Cody and shoot some commercials. So I will try and keep you guys posted on everything that I have going on.

Yuuuuuaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh. Take care everybody!!!

Dwight, darling. I am so happy to hear that you’re spending time with Hakeem. I grew up watching him in his twilight years and I gotta say, he’s one of the best that ever played the game. You will be, too, I’m sure.

I understand why you can’t watch the Finals. I’d like to say I feel the pain too but yours is just close. Anyway, you’re still very young! You can do so much more!

  22. Habib says:

Dwight, I am glad you are working with Hakeem. About time, you need an exponential improvement in your offensive game for the Magic to have any chance to win the championship.

  23. devin says:

Dwight i am glad to see you happy but since your working with Hakeem hopefully you and the Orlando Magic can bring home a NBA Championship

  24. Kara W says:

    Hi Dwight,

I have been reading your blogs for a while, but I’m not sure if you ever comment on fan responses. Anyway, I was wondering what projects you will be working on with Basketball Without Borders. What country in Africa will you be in and how long will you be there?

  25. Schenley Vital says:

I am a long time fan and I feel obliged to make the following suggestions:

Orlando should use M. Gortat as trade bait to dump ideally R. Lewis salary or at the very least Vince Carter.

    1) M. Gortat and Vince Carter ( 5.8 mill. and 16.1 mill. respectively next year) for:

Rudy Gay in a sign and trade or another decent SG.

    2) M. Gortat and R. Lewis (5.8 mill. and 18.0 mill. respectively next year) for:

I would say next to nothing. We already have M. Barnes in that can play stating minutes and be a adequate role player. The sell to any team that is rebuilding is that they get an excellent center with great potential (for cheap) and a SF that still has big play potential despite an off year. Both players are ready to compete now. The value to our team is get the ridiculous contract off the books. Such a scenario would allow us to get a free agent to address the four position or the shoot guard position. Dwight Howard is the best center in the league that many free agent would love to play with.

Something needs to be done. Whoever receives this, forward this anonymously or do whatever it take to get this in to the right hands. Complacency is not an option. We must remain contenders while D. Howard is in his prime.

  26. jenika Bannerman says:

I just want to say that you are my rolemodel as basketball player and also a person and I think alot of kids like me (I’m 14) can learn something from you, even if your not their favorite NBA player.
If I had one dream it would be to meet Dwight Howard as a person, off the court :)
by the way…good luck in the NBAs next year and summer games, oh yeah and the dunking contests!
from your admire (not in a creepy way),
    jenika

  27. Aries says:

    Good Evening Mr. Howard:

I hope when/if you read this, all is well with you. I’ll try to make this short and sweet.

This is the first time I’ve read one of your posts, and I’m impressed with the loyal following you have built for yourself. There aren’t many celebrities who take the time to do little things to make their fans happy. I admire your ambition and your dedication; I hope I’m able to maintain the same positive attitude when I hit my own road blocks.

Master the ability to create your own fortune, and you’ll get your ring. I wish you the best in your future endeavours.

  28. Dhahran says:

I cant wait to see your new moves next season from working with “The Dream”. You are my most favorite player ever and I saw in one of your Q&As that you most wanted to play with Dwyane Wade. I think that would be awsome because the Superman & Flash 2 duo would be unstoppable and D-Wade just happens to be my #2 favorite player. I think it would be great if yal played together. If the magic were going for him in free agency I bet yall would have won tons of championships.

  29. Nicole Ledgister says:

    Hi D

You are truly an inspiration, I commend you on your perserverance I know it wasn’t easy to pick yourself back up but it’ all part of the game you didn’t sulk you just found a way to better yourself in your craft and thats a wonderful trait to have. I know come next year you will bring the heat to the game with what you have learn. I wish you all the best in your up coming projects. Stay bless

    Nick

  30. Dougie D says:

Hey Dwight! I’m a HUGE fan of both you and Hakeem so i’m glad you two get along. I’m actually from boston and i’m 11 so all my friends were getting on me about liking the magic.
Anyway i just want to ask you about my nba chances. Everyone says i have nba potential and i can beat the 8th grade boys team (who won the states) 1 vs 15, im extremely dedicated and work out 3 hrs a day 6 days a week (all except sunday). So what are my chances? not really sure if you read these anyway. Rock on future MVP/Defensive Player of the year/nba champ,
    Later, Big man :) ,
    Dougie D

  31. Ramon Jesus Corporan says:

Dear Mr. Howard, I’m sure you have heard the news of the great trio and possibly future “dynasty” being created in south florida, You may also be aware that you are in the same conference with the aforemention team. So as a fan I would like to bring to your attention that because of this event this league is no longer a “one super star team”. While there miami trio may look very high and mighty there is one person that can stop their reign before all is forgotten and a repeat of the “jordan era” comes again. Just to name a few players such as “Sir” Charles Barkley, Larry “Grandma-ma” Johnson, and Reggie Miller were all great players and not to take anything away from them but a certain team outshined them thus leaving some or all ringLESS. But you do not have to follow the same path YOU can make a difference. As a humbled fan I just wish you could take my suggestion not for this year but maybe next year. Perhaps you can create your own dynasty in central florida with the likes of upcoming free agents like carmelo anthony and chris paul. Mr. Howard thank you for your time and hopefully you will use your voice and power in the organization to raise some eyebrows and hopefully be the REAL dynasty.

    Sincerely, a concerned fan.

p.s I realllly reallly hope you read this, I spent a minute on it.

Thanks for taking your time to read this.

  32. Ramon Jesus Corporan says:

I would also like to add, i love otis smith thats my dude:)

But I quote on what smith said in an interview “he doesn’t feel pressure to try and counter the Heat’s moves with splashy acquisitions of his own.”

    - With all due respect to the GM, c’mon dude, we have to do something its lebron james, dwade, and bosh. That’s just cheating lol. I think you should pressure him lol

He also goes on to say `They’ve got to get over us, not the other way around,’’ Smith said. “We still hold the (division) crown the last I checked.’’

-Ummmm the problem with this one is last time I checked was the last time he checked, it’s a new season. Ohhh and I checked and they have lebron now. So if you can please big dawg.
