WE GOTTA WIN TO GET OUR RESPECT

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Hey, ya’ll. We’re getting geeked already about being in the Finals and I can hardly wait for the games to begin. We had Sunday off to get our legs back under us after that Cleveland game and on Monday we just had a short film session. On Tuesday we get back to practice and then fly to L.A.

People are already wondering if we’ll freeze up because this group is in the Finals for the first time. My response to that has been that we’re a loose group and we just don’t seem to get tight in any circumstance.

I mean, think back to how my guys played without me in Philly in Game 6. Think back to how we played in Boston for that do-or-die Game 7 up there. Think back to the Cleveland series when everybody thought we’d lose and we came up big and won that one in six games.

It really doesn’t matter how many lights they put on the court for the Finals, it’s still going to be the same size court, the rims will still be 10 feet and it’s still basketball. I’m not worried about us tightening up.

We’ve won in L.A. each of the last two years and we did beat the Lakers twice in the regular season, so it’s not like we don’t have confidence going out there. You can’t put much stock in what happened in the regular season, but we know we can beat anybody when we play our game.

We know already that we’re the underdogs and nobody is going to give us a chance to beat the Lakers. But really every series that we’ve been in since the first round against Philadelphia we’ve been considered the underdog. That’s fine with us. We’ve been the underdog all year. Our job is to just go play. The only way that you gain respect is by winning and that’s our plan.

We still know we have to win to get the respect we deserve. Getting to the Finals won’t be enough. What I’ve been hearing already is that this is the first time the Magic are in the Finals and they don’t have a lot of experience. And we’ve heard about when teams first make it to the Finals they normally lose. We’ve heard it all already. Our mindset is not to say that we’re just happy we made it to the Finals. Our goal is to win it.

Everybody is talking now about whether Jameer is going to come back. We just want to see the little guy get healthy because I know this injury has been hard on him. He’s been working really hard to get back on the court, and I’m sure if the coaches think he can help us in the Finals, we might see him back out there.

Well, OK ya’ll, it’s getting closer to Game 1 and I’m ready to go. Hope ya’ll are getting ready too. I’ll blog tomorrow from L.A. and give ya’ll and update about how we’re getting ready to go for Game 1.

BREAKING BACKBOARDS

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

When people up here in Cleveland aren’t talking about LeBron (and that’s really rare) they are mentioning the backboard that I broke the other night in Game 1. I didn’t even know that it happened at first and when I heard everybody yelling, `Ohhhhhh,’ I thought my dunk must have been nasty on the replay. But then I saw whole thing had come down. After that I thought we should have just played half court for a while until they could fix the goal.

You’ve got to realize that I’ve broken a few backboards in my day. I guess I’m just too dang strong for my own good. I have four under my belt now. I’ve broken the glass, rim, everything. The first time was on one of my teammates in high school. The second time was a SLAM photo shoot. And the third time was at the YMCA in Atlanta. It’s funny to me when it happens and makes me feel all strong and swole up.

We have our minds on beating the Cavs again tonight and being greedy. We got one, but we didn’t come up her to get one win. We want ‘em both and that’s all guys have talked about. We know Cleveland will come up hungry tonight and we have to match that intensity.

We got some national love after winning the Boston series and getting Game 1 the other night, but we still have a lot to prove to people. We have to get this series and gain the respect of everyone around the league. I just think that if we play hard for 48 minutes, we should be able to do what nobody thinks we can do.

It still kind of feels like the LeBron Show up here and we’re just the background actors sometimes. When I look at TV all I see is everybody wanting to see LeBron and Kobe in The Finals. It should make us upset. We feel that we have a legitimate chance of winning a NBA championship. We have the right team, right coaching staff and players to do it. It’s not going to be easy and we have to take it. We have to believe that every night.

We’ve been under the radar all year and it’s motivated us. We’ve won one game, but that doesn’t mean anything. We want to gain everybody’s respect, but you do that by winning big games and series like this. We don’t want to take anything for granted after winning one game.

We’ll be ready tonight – believe that. We know what we gotta do.

Peace out, lil’ homies. — D-12

MY MEMORIES OF THE SEASON

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

The regular season finally comes to an end and we can’t wait to get to the playoffs starting this weekend. We haven’t played great down the stretch and we’ve still got some nagging things going on with injuries, but we’ll make the best of it and be ready when the playoffs start.

It’s been a really good season for us. We went from 52 wins to 58 (and maybe 59). I still remember back to when we lost the first two games in a row and people were saying that the Magic were going to have a bad year. But we turned everything around very quickly and I think it shows how we matured.

We don’t get a lot of recognition nationally, but I guess people forget that we beat the Lakers twice, Cleveland twice, Boston twice and San Antonio twice. That has to count for something, right?

Because we have played so well against the best teams, we think we can win a championship. We know the playoffs are a different beast, but we’re confident that we can do anything we can put our minds to.

I promised myself and my teammates that I would be better defensively this season and I went out and led the NBA in blocks. That’s just proof that when you put your mind to something you can accomplish it.

Of all the good memories from this season, I have one that I still think is the absolutely funniest of the year. It was a couple of weeks ago against Cleveland when Marcin Gortat became the first Polish player in the history of basketball since James Naismith to hit a 3-pointer. Now that was a sight to see. That’s one for the historians and record books all time.

I’m out. Take care, ya’ll. — DWIGHT

GETTING READY FOR THE PLAYOFFS

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Some people who I have talked to are worried that we are struggling down the stretch and I’m the first to admit that we are in a little slump right now.

But I really think as soon as we get our legs back under us, get healthy and start up the playoffs that we will be ready to go again.

It was great to hear that Turk’s ankle injury isn’t too serious. At first, we were worried that he d have to be out a while and that would hurt us come playoff time. But he’s fine and he’ll be back playing maybe Wednesday against Charlotte and if not by then he’ll certainly be back in the lineup for the playoffs.

And the same goes for Rashard. He just has tendonitis in his knees and needed a few days to get himself right again. With fresh legs, I’m sure he’ll be back to hitting shots for us in the playoffs.

Trust me, I know all too well that knee tendonitis is no joke. I had to miss two games earlier this season because tendonitis was bothering me in my knee. It probably built up because I played with Team USA all summer.

I think it did me some good to sit out Monday night in Milwaukee and observe. I’ve been kind of frustrated lately and it was good to sit back and observe and see some things from the bench. It’s been a long season and we need to be fresh and ready to come once the playoffs begin this weekend.

As for who we’re going to play in the playoffs, we know that it will be either Philly or Chicago. Detroit is no longer an option because they are going to be the No. 8 seed.

I think there are some things we can exploit against either one of those teams in the playoffs if we were to meet them. Looking at the stat sheet, I played better this season against Chicago than I did Philadelphia. But the Bulls are a lot different team now that they have Brad Miller, who I became friends with a few years back from my time on Team USA.

Anyway, I’m ready for the postseason to begin. We think we can do something special this season and we need the fans to be there to help us.

PEACE, OUT. — DWIGHT

IF I HAD PLAYED COLLEGE BASKETBALL …

Monday, April 6th, 2009

I’m often asked how my life and my game on the court would be different had I gone to college, but I really don’t think about it that much because growing up my goal was always to be the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft.

I accomplished that goal in 2004 without going to college, so I don’t look back. Because they no longer let kids jump from high school to the NBA (which I don’t totally agree with), I could be the last high school player ever to be chosen No. 1 overall.

I watch some college basketball, but really there’s no comparison between the college games and the NBA. What’s the better game? I’m going to go with the NBA.

College is very animated and they play hard, but it’s nothing like the NBA at all. In the NBA, that’s the best kind of basketball in the world.

Some people think the NBA is slow, but if you sit close enough you really see how fast the game is and how physical it is. And we have the best athletes in the world, so that makes for a better game.

Since we’re off tonight and in Houston, I’m sure I’ll watch some of the national championship game with the fellas on the team. As to who I think will win the game, few people actually know where I considered going to college before I made up my mind to enter the NBA Draft. (I made the right decision, don’t you think???)

If I had gone to college, it would have been to Carolina. So go Heels tonight.

Peace. — DWIGHT
