Last Night’s Steel Cage Match Against Memphis

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Heyyyyy wooorrrrrlllddd!!! We bounced back from that Spurs loss with a pretty good win at home against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday. It was really dead and quiet in the arena until my boy, Matt Barnes, livened things up in the third quarter.

Matt got into it with Hasheem Thabeet and I think that sort of woke our team up. We were sort of sluggish to start the second half and that little fight he had seemed to spark us in a big way.

That Barnes-Thabeet cage match went pretty well for us. Matt got kicked out of the cage and sent to the locker room, but at the end of the night we won the Royal Rumble.

The Big Show (me) didn’t get a T. Ric Flair (Vince Carter) got a T. And Hulk Hogan (Matt) got kicked out of the steel cage match. Matt apologized to us after the game, but we all understood where he was coming from because we don’t take too much of anything personally on this team. We actually enjoyed that little pushing match and it fired us up.

As for the game, I’ve got to admit to ya’ll that it was another frustrating night for me. I made the same moves that I always make, but got three walks called on me. I’ve got to back and study the films and see what I did wrong so I don’t get those travels called again.

I’m trying not to get frustrated and let it affect me out there on the court. But as of late, things on the court have been very frustrating out there for me. I’m kind of worried about how things are going for me before the playoffs, but I just have to keep playing and not let anything that happens dictate a response from me.

On a positive note, we have now beaten every team in the NBA this season and we’re the only team to do that. Our coach put that on the board before the game to try and fire us up and that’s certainly something to be proud of.

We’re just a game back of the Lakers in the standings, and hopefully we can pass them so that if we meet again in the Finals, we would have homecourt advantage here in Orlando. Of course, we’ve got a lot of basketball to play between now and then, but I really like how we’re coming together as a team.

‘Shard is shooting it great now, Vince is playing the best he’s been all season and guys like Brandon Bass, J.J. Redick and Ryan Anderson are doing well off the bench. I knew it would take some time for our team to come together, but we’re gelling good now. I really think we’re ready to go into the playoffs and do our thing.

Well, I’m gonna get up outta here. Five more games and then the playoffs start. They can’t get here quick enough.

A very frustrating night!!!

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

Heyyyyy woooorrrrrrrlddd!!! I hope all of y’all are doing well!

Last night in San Antonio felt about as bad as Thursday night felt really good in Dallas. I missed some free throws, they fouled me intentionally, I fouled out and some fans threw beer on us as we walked off the floor. Yep, an all-around bad night.

I go out Thursday night against Dallas and get zero fouls. Then, on Friday, I got myself into foul trouble almost from the jump. Maybe it’s because Thursday was April fools day? lol.

I struggled with my free throws, but I know in my head that I work on them every day and I know I can make them in the playoffs. I just have to keep my head, play at peace and I can’t allow things to frustrate me out there. Guys have told me that all good centers in this league go through nights like this. I just have to keep working on my free throws and get better.

As for them fouling me intentionally, that’s the part that upset me the most. Just play out the game and don’t resort to fouling like that. I told my guys after the game when we see them again next year if they do that the result will be different.

Really, I’m just upset about what happened. Teams hacking me intentionally. It happened against the Milwaukee Bucks a couple of years ago and I was so frustrated I couldn’t make my free throws. Against the Spurs, I let my frustration get to me and I couldn’t concentrate on my free throws. I’ve got to keep my composure better. My team needs me on the floor.

To make it a horrible night all around, we had a fan yelling at us from behind the bench. He was yelling at me to work on my free throws and I just said “OK”. When some of my teammates said something to him he just started attacking me.

I’d never, ever berate a fan because fans are here to have fun and there are kids in the crowd watching everything that we do. But then you’ve got this guy back there flipping us the bird and cussing. I mean I understand diehard fans, but there’s no need for fans to be out there attacking guys personally and cussing us out.

Oh well, we’ll bounce back from this. Rest assured, we’ll come back angry on Sunday when we play Memphis at home. We’ve done a pretty good job of not letting one game affect another game.

That’s it for now, y’all. Happy Easter!!!

Back at home in the A-T-L!!!

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Heyyyyyy worrrrrlllddd!!! Back in Hot-lanta, my hometown of course. Got to see my folks last night and spend some time with the people who mean the most to me in this world. It’s always good to be back home, and it sort of breaks up life on the road in the NBA.

I’m lucky because the Hawks are in our division, so that means I get to go home two times a year during the regular season and most years we are up here in the preseason too. We haven’t been here to play since Thanksgiving Day so it’s good to go back to the crib and seem the fam!!!

Now, comes the trouble of trying to find enough tickets for all of my family, friends and homeboys who want to come and watch us play. I actually have to get more ticket now that I used when I first came into the league. That’s kind of a challenge, but it’s all good because I know those people are coming to the game to show their support for me and the Magic. And it’s always good to have your own cheering section on the road when the crowd is mostly for the home team.

Early in my career, I couldn’t wait to play at home. But back then I’d try to see everybody and do too much. I would spread myself way too thin and try to do way too much while I was in town. Now, I just go see my mom and dad and the crew and relax and get my mind right to go play the Hawks.

You always want to play well in front of your hometown, but I try not to put that extra pressure. Ya’ll know it’s all about having fun with me, so I just clear my mind and go out on the court to have fun.

We’ve played really well against the Hawks the last two years. Before that they used to beat us all the time and we could never figure out how to beat the Hawks. But now we play more inside-out basketball and we go right at their bigs and try to get them into foul trouble. It’s really been working for us because I think we’ve beaten them six times in a row.

We need this one tonight. A win against the Hawks would give us a pretty good lead and just about lock up another division title for us. It was so cool the other night in Philly, locking up our 50th win. That’s the third year in a row that we’ve done that, and to me that shows a great sign of progress as a franchise. We were kind of a laughing stock as a franchise and I think people really see us now as team that’s been good and is going to stay good for a long time.

So wish us luck in da A-T-L tonight. This will be a tough one because those dudes will be out to get us because of the way we’ve played against them the last couple of years. But we’ll be ready for the challenge!!! Yuuuuaaaaa!!!

Dwight Howard named winner of DeVos Community Enrichment Award

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Orlando Magic superstar center Dwight Howard was named the winner of the 2009-10 Rich and Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award Sunday night at the 20th annual Orlando Magic Youth Foundation Gala.

It is the fourth time overall and the third consecutive year that Dwight has won the community involvement award among Magic players. Dwight won in 2004-05 and then 2007-10.

Each year at the Gala, the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation honors a player who has dedicated his efforts off the court for the purpose of enhancing others’ lives. An anonymous panel of external representatives selects the player. In addition to receiving the award, the player is granted $50,000 from the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation to donate to the charity of his choice.

Dwight has consistently volunteered his time off the court and to the Central Florida community supporting the initiatives of the Magic’s community relations department, the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation, a fund of the McCormick Foundation and the NBA. Highlights of his community involvement for the 2009-10 season include:

∙ Dwight donated $30,000 to Florida Hospital for Children to help bring advancements to the children’s hospital through the Dwight Howard’s Big Change for Kids program.

∙ Dwight donated $25,000 for a learning center at BETA, which provides middle and high school academic training to teen moms through Orange County Public Schools’ Alternative Education Program.

∙ Dwight participated in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program in South Africa. The program focuses on education, grassroots basketball development and HIV/AIDS education and advocacy.

∙ Dwight assisted building a playground as part of the Magic’s annual KaBoom! playground build for the Oak Street Park Community Center.

∙ Dwight donated $25,000 to “Blessings in a Backpack” to provide children from Lake Como Elementary with a nutritious meal on the weekends.

∙ Dwight provided the opportunity for 100 children each game a chance to see
the Magic play through his ticket program.

∙ Dwight donated gifts and met with families for the Magic holiday party with underprivileged children and their families.

∙ Dwight attended the “Buddy Jam 2010’’ with Mayor Buddy Dyer to help raise funds for the Parramore Kidz Zone program.

∙ Dwight participated in two internal autograph sessions, which helps support Central Florida non-profit organizations by raising money through silent auctions.

∙ While in Dallas for All-Star weekend 2010, Dwight participated in a KaBoom! playground build as part of NBA Cares service projects.

Past winners of the award include Nick Anderson (1995-1996), Penny Hardaway (1996-1997), Darrell Armstrong (1997-1998, 1999-2000), Grant Hill (2000-2001), Monty Williams (2001-2002), Tracy McGrady (2002-2003), Pat Garrity (2003-2004) and Bo Outlaw (1998-1999, 2005-2006, 2006-2007).

The funds raised this year by the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation and matched by the McCormick Foundation were distributed to the community through the Orlando Magic Youth Fund, a fund of the McCormick Foundation in grants totaling $689,000. On January 6, checks to 23 grantee organizations from three different counties (Orange, Seminole and Osceola) were presented at halftime of the Magic vs. Raptors game.

The beneficiaries were recommended by the OMYF “VIP’’ Committee and then approved by the McCormick Foundation’s Board of Directors after an extensive five-phase process which began in July of 2009.

The Orlando Magic Youth Fund, a fund of the McCormick Foundation, focuses on helping children in Central Florida realize their full potential, especially those most at risk, by supporting programs and partnerships that empower families and change lives.

OMYF, founded in 1988, became a fund of the McCormick Foundation in 1994. OMYF is supported through a team effort by Magic players, coaches, staff and the DeVos Family, in partnership with season ticket holders, corporate partners, fans and the community and matching funds provided by the McCormick Foundation. Since inception, nearly $154 million has been granted through OMYF to local nonprofit organizations.
