Dwight Howard 's Growth Has Helped Streaky Magic Take Division Lead
Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic have been on the cusp for two years.

Dwight Howard has been close to making an All-Star team and becoming the league's youngest ever rebound king. The Magic have been teetering on the edge of playoff contention after falling short the past three seasons.

Both of them could tip in 2007.

At 21-14, Orlando leads the Southeast Division and owns one of the best records in the weak Eastern Conference. Dwight Howard, at 21 years old, is averaging 17 points and a league-best 12.5 rebounds, and has had three games this season with more than 20 points and rebounds.

"I love him, he's a hell of a player," Boston coach Doc Rivers said after Orlando's 87-79 win over the Celtics on Sunday. "Obviously he still has a lot to learn, but he knows enough now to be a dominant big in our league."

Dwight Howard finished 10th in All-Star balloting among Eastern Conference forwards last year, but is on the ballot as a center this time. He's second in fan voting behind Shaquille O'Neal, but could make the team as a coaches' selection or filling in for the injured O'Neal.

Dwight Howard leads a core of dominating bigs and hustling defenders that have helped Orlando win four in a row. The Magic are in the NBA's top five in opponents' field goal percentage, rebounds per game and assists per game. However, they're among the league's worst in turnovers (17) and points per game (92).

The Magic will put their streak on the line with a four-game road trip starting Wednesday at Golden State.

Orlando had one of the NBA's best records after a 12-4 November, but stumbled in December amid injuries to starters Hedo Turkoglu and Jameer Nelson.

The Magic have regained the division lead with the current streak, but their enthusiasm may be tempered by the fact that their last four opponents were without key players: the Miami Heat (Dwyane Wade and O'Neal), Charlotte Bobcats (Gerald Wallace), Los Angeles Clippers (Sam Cassell) and Celtics (Paul Pierce).

Dwight Howard says he sees the team getting more mature, but they're still working.

"When I came here, in the first, second quarters we'd play great, but in the second half our effort goes down," Dwight Howard said. "This year sometimes it's flip-flopped, second half we play as hard as we can, first half we don't."

They've gotten an offensive spark from Grant Hill, who has had minor injuries and skipped games to rest but still averages 15 points. Perhaps the most surprising contribution has come from Trevor Ariza, a 6-foot-8 forward acquired in last year's trade that sent Steve Francis to the New York Knicks. The third-year player has been a fearless driver to the bucket with an uncanny ability to adjust in the air. He's averaging nine points and four rebounds, and started six games with Turkoglu out.

Orlando has also turned Darko Milicic, the former No. 1 overall pick exiled in Detroit, into a consistent contributor averaging seven points and almost five rebounds.

He and Dwight Howard are both in the top 20 in blocks per game, with Dwight Howard averaging almost two and Milicic averaging 1.65.

The first three games of Orlando's road trip, at the Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns, are against teams that beat Orlando at home.

"If we can come out and play well and sort of get revenge, so to speak, and get a good win, hopefully that will carry momentum for us," Hill said.

NBA Future:
Glen Davis
Glen Davis showed that even though he is a lighter version of himself, he is still a lot to handle in the paint.

Glen Davis scored 26 points and Tasmin Mitchell added 21 as No. 7 Louisiana State pounded the ball inside frequently in its 88-57 victory over Louisiana-Monroe.

Despite being down 37 pounds from his playing weight of 326 last season, Glen Davis continued to be a force inside, making 10-of-15 shots and grabbing eight rebounds.

Behind the reigning Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, the Tigers (2-0) finished with a 42-12 advantage in points in the paint and won the rebounding battle, 43-28.
