After Shaq, It Was a Long Road to Dwight Howard

By: Brian Schmitz | Orlando Sentinel

The Orlando Magic might soon reach the point at which the season must be turned over to the research and development department.

"Project Dwight Howard'' should be their top priority.

Accelerating Dwight Howard 's progress should outweigh chasing playoff crumbs. If his growing pains mean sacrificing some victories, so be it. A smart trade-off, that. As dark as things appear, Dwight Howard is the bright light they have to follow. He is the Magic's future and the most promising force here since Shaquille O'Neal.

A great big man is a rare commodity and harder to find in an NBA locker room than a Neil Diamond CD. Now working at power forward, Dwight Howard says he'd gladly play center full time. "It would be cool," he said.

He didn't used to feel this way. He's always wanted to be Kevin Garnett -- more arts than crafts. At 6 feet 11, he says he likely will put on another 25 pounds over the next few years and play at 285.

Do you realize the players who have tried to step into Shaq's size 22s after his exit in 1996?

The line of would-be replacements began forming behind Rony Seikaly, meandered through John Amaechi and pauses now at Tony Battie. Ten years and oh, about a dozen candidates later, the Magic have found a facsimile. A Shaqsimile.

Get the kid the ball. Let him learn more lessons and take more lumps.

As much as the Magic think he's touching it, he needs to see it even more. Domino's delivers, but sometimes his teammates can't.

And Dwight Howard , 20, has to want it in his hands. The more proficient he becomes, the easier the game will be for everybody.

Can you imagine if Howard was having the kind of sophomore breakthrough that Jameer Nelson is enjoying?

What Nelson has going for him that Howard doesn't: Jameer is playing with a glowing sense of confidence, largely because of his college-bred maturity. He feels like he belongs in the NBA.

Dwight Howard has yet to cross that bridge.

The Magic have to take his hand and devote the rest of the season to him at some point. They no longer can be all about Steve Francis or reviving Grant Hill. Such distractions and instability take the club's focus off what should be their 6-foot-11, 260-pound priority.
