Dwight Howard Reveals He'll Play For U.S. Olympic Team
Brian Schmitz | Sentinel Staff Writer
Magic power forward Dwight Howard told the Sentinel on Wednesday that he has committed to play for the U.S. Olympic basketball team and in the 2008 Games in China . Dwight Howard will be the youngest NBA player on the squad. Players have to make a two-year commitment and play this summer in the World Championships.
LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers recently committed to playing.
"They asked me last year . . . and I've said yes. I've been kind of keeping it to myself," said Dwight Howard, 20, the overall top pick in the 2004 NBA draft.
"I'm really looking forward to it. Wow, to get to play in the Olympics? That's something I've always watched and wanted to do."
And Dwight Howard hopes he can keep enjoying the Olympic experience and represent his country in 2012 and 2016.
"I'm hoping I can play in a couple more after that [2008]," he said.
Hill says he probably shouldn't have played
With his team reeling, Magic forward Grant Hill played Sunday against the Sacramento Kings -- and he says he probably shouldn't have.
"Maybe I played the other day when I shouldn't have," Hill said, "but I wanted to get out there and help."
Hill had not played in the previous four games, bothered by the soreness in the area where he had sports hernia surgery Oct. 31. Hill will be out 7-10 days, but it is doubtful he will return until the pain totally subsides.
The Magic had lost three consecutive games on the West trip when Hill decided to play against the Kings.
Hill then traveled to Philadelphia on Monday to see Dr. William Meyers, who performed his hernia surgery and administered two cortisone shots for inflammation.
"There was pain; there was problems," he said. "We got some answers. There's a plan to follow, so that's encouraging from a team standpoint. It's just tough. It's unfortunate. . . . We'll give it every opportunity to let it calm down. Best case, it will calm down. Worst case . . . Plan F."
Etc.
The Magic have a five-game winning streak at home wearing their throwback white pinstripe uniforms, and it will stay at five -- for now, anyway. The club decided not to wear them Wednesday night against the Washington Wizards. Club sources said they did not want to challenge the league, which had warned the Magic about wearing the throwbacks beyond the 10 designated dates. . . . The Wizards bought out the remainder of guard Chucky Atkins' contract Wednesday. Atkins, who played at Evans High School and USF, had one year left on his deal for $4.5 million. He is free to sign with any team for the minimum. Magic Assistant General Manager Otis Smith said the team -- which already has four guards who can play the point -- was not interested.
