Dwight Howard's Return is a Slam Dunk

Magic center Dwight Howard said he doesn't plan on his first all-star slam-dunk contest being his last.

"Heck, no. I'll do it again," he said before the Magic's game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday.

Howard then added with a laugh, "Anything to show off my personality and athletic ability."

Howard said he has talked to former slam-dunk champ Vince Carter, among other players, about the event. He tried out some dunks after Tuesday's shootaround at the Bradley Center, with veteran Grant Hill serving as judge. "I'd give you a '9' on that one," Hill said after Howard whirled and dunked.

"You need better stuff than that, man," said point guard Jameer Nelson, who will participate in the contest with Howard, tossing balls to him on some dunk attempts. Turning to Hill, Nelson said, "The thing is, every time Dwight does a dunk, it looks so easy."

Diener just a cut above

Teammates don't need a schedule to know when the Magic are heading to Milwaukee for a game. They just look at point guard Travis Diener's head.

"I get a haircut," said Diener, the second-year guard who grew up in Fond du Lac, Wis., and played at Marquette. "This is the first time since October I've had my hair cut. Got to come home with a new look."

Diener scored 14 points against the Bucks on Dec. 3, 2005, hitting all four of his 3-point shots in his first trip back to Milwaukee as an NBA rookie. He said this time he's "more calm," but added, "It's still a game I always circle when the schedule comes out. I played four years in this arena."

Etc.

Bucks guard Michael Redd is close to returning from a knee injury, but he was held out of the game against the Magic. He is not at all happy about being left off the Eastern Conference roster for the Feb. 18 NBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas. He averaged 27.7 points per game before missing the past 16 games with the injury. "Mad. Disappointed. I don't know what it is. I don't know what else you've got to do," Redd told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I was having the best year of my career, and it happens. I don't know. I can't explain it." . . . After its loss Tuesday night, Orlando has dropped 15 of its past 16 games in Milwaukee the past decade. The Magic won here in November 2002.
