Star-Snubbed Dwight Howard Can't Rescue Magic
By Dick Scanlon
The Ledger
On the day he officially became an All-Star snubee, Dwight Howard came up with a record-breaking first quarter for the Magic. But it was just one quarter and Dwight Howard was just one player Friday night, playing against the NBA's best team.
Once the game settled in, the Detroit Pistons had little trouble neutralizing Dwight Howard and handing the Magic their seventh loss in eight games, an 84-73 decision played before a sellout crowd of 17,283.
Rasheed Wallace scored 26 points, Richard Hamilton added 23 and the Pistons used a flurry of Magic turnovers to build an 18-point lead early in the fourth quarter.
Dwight Howard led Orlando with 19 points and padded his league rebounding lead with 17. But the Magic couldn't stay with Detroit , and the most telling statistic was this -- the Pistons had 26 assists on 34 field goals to the Magic's 10 assists on 31 baskets.
"They've been playing together for a while. They know where everybody's going to be," observed Dwight Howard. "Chauncey (Billups) got in the lane and he knew exactly where Richard Hamilton was going to be.
"Once you really learn how to play with each other . . . you develop instincts and a feel for what other players like to do."
The Magic (19-29) have no such feel. They were still in the game until they turned the ball over four times in a row late in the third quarter. The Pistons had 11 turnovers total.
"They have like an unspoken language when they're playing together," said Keyon Dooling. "They're a great team, a championship team, the best team in the league."
Dwight Howard, who has a rebound average of 12.7, was left off the Eastern Conference All-Star team Friday when commissioner David Stern named Washington 's Gilbert Arenas to replace the injured Jermaine O'Neal of Indiana .
Dwight Howard set franchise records in the first quarter for rebounds (12) and offensive rebounds (7), and scored five of 11 straight Magic points that left them with a 26-20 lead, their largest of the game.
A 3-pointer by Pat Garrity gave the Magic another sixpoint lead midway through the second quarter at a time when Detroit was shooting 11-for-37.
But the rest of the game was all Pistons. The Magic never led in the second half.
"We just came out and moved the ball around," said Piston center Ben Wallace. MAGIC NOTES
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper and Hall of Fame Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda were in the crowd.
