Dwight Howard called his first year in the NBA a good learning experience.

Now, the former Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy standout is ready to teach some youngsters some of the skills he learned his rookie season as a professional.

Dwight Howard says he wants to share lessons from his first year in the NBA with others. Through his foundation, Howard and his father, Dwight Howard Sr., will run a weeklong camp July 18-22 at Douglass High School .

"I think I did a pretty good job this past season," said Howard, who was named to the all-rookie team. "I really learned a lot about the game. I learned some of the ins and outs of the NBA life. You learn to deal with a lot of things in basketball and life."

Howard has been busy this off-season making the camp rounds. Earlier this month, Howard and his father toured China to promote basketball for the NBA. He also had stops in the Philippines , Hong Kong and Taiwan .

Howard said he got the idea to start a basketball camp from teammate Steve Francis. Last summer, Howard worked the Francis camp in Houston .

"I thought this would be a good thing to do in Atlanta ," Howard said. "I want to give something back because of the things I've learned in the last year."

Howard said he expects former Atlanta Hawk Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Grant Hill, Jameer Nelson and Magic Johnson to make guest appearances.

"I've developed some friendships and contacts," Howard said.

The 6-11, 250-pound forward averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds last season. Howard had a season-high 29 points against the Los Angeles Clippers and had 20 rebounds in a game three times during the season.

Last week, Howard was guest speaker at the annual National Basketball Players Association Top 100 Camp in Richmond . Two years ago, Howard was a camp participant entering his senior season at SACA.

The camp was attended by former teammate Javaris Crittenton and Howard's younger brother, Jahaziel. Jarvis Crittenton is considered one of the top point guards in the country.

The younger Howard is entering his junior year at SACA. Last season, the Warriors reached the Class A finals.

"It was great helping at the camp," Howard said. "I remember my time when I was attending the camp. It give me a chance to talk to the campers about my experience."

The Howard and Howard Basketball Camp at Douglass High is open to ages 6-16.
