Dwight Howard Looks For Ways To Help Out

MAITLAND -- Dwight Howard doesn't want to make a habit of getting only three field-goal attempts in a game.
But at least the Orlando Magic have shown they can win with their second-leading scorer and the NBA's second-leading rebounder not having many good looks at the basket.
Dwight Howard had a hard time Monday night at Boston getting into much of a flow on offense against the Celtics and struggled when he went to the free-throw line. But the Magic were able to open their stretch of four consecutive road games with an 87-83 victory, although Dwight Howard 's 17 points and 19 rebounds Tuesday night couldn't prevent an 85-76 loss at Chicago.
"Before I even had a chance to post up, a guy was standing in front of me," Dwight Howard said Thursday before the Magic left for tonight's game at Memphis. "So I've just got to learn how to play with that and not just get mad because I'm not getting the ball but try to do other things to help my teammates out."
Dwight Howard's biggest contribution was a block of a shot by the Celtics' Mark Blount that could have tied the score at 83. Dwight Howard might have to lend a similar hand against the Grizzlies, the only team allowing fewer points a game than the Magic on average.
"Hopefully I can be a decoy," he said. "If they try to put a lot of pressure on me, that would leave the other guys open."
"We didn't do a good job of getting him the ball," Magic coach Brian Hill said. "But at the same time, because of all the emphasis that was placed on Dwight Howard, it created scoring opportunities for other people."
Steve Francis, Jameer Nelson and Pat Garrity capitalized on many of those chances against the Celtics. But Francis went only 2-of-9 from the floor against the Bulls and didn't practice Thursday because of lingering pain (chest, shoulder) from a car accident two weeks ago.
Centers Tony Battie and Kelvin Cato got tangled during practice and were limping afterward, but both players are expected to be available at Memphis as well as Saturday night at Milwaukee.
Francis had 22 points for the Magic in their loss to the Grizzlies in Orlando last month. Dwight Howard scored 16 points but only pulled down a season-low five rebounds.
"Some nights it happens like that," said Dwight Howard, who has posted at least 10 points and 10 rebounds in the last four games and 11 times in the Magic's first 16 games. "But I just want to try and stay consistent."
As odd as it was to get only three shots in 36 minutes at Boston, that was no less strange that what happened early in the fourth quarter at Chicago. Dwight Howard was whistled for the first technical foul of his career after taking an elbow from the Bulls' Tyson Chandler, whom he accused of holding his jersey earlier.
"It's cool. It's basketball," Dwight Howard said. "I wasn't mad at him. He wasn't mad at me."
