Friday, May 13th, 2011

Dwight Howard’s finest individual season in the NBA just keeps getting better.

The Orlando Magic’s star center was named to the All-NBA first-team squad for a fourth consecutive season on Thursday. Dwight narrowly missed being a unanimous first-team selection for a second straight year, getting 118 of a possible 119 votes from a national panel of media members.

Dwight has been a first-team All-NBA pick now in 2011, 2010, 2009 and 2008. He was a third-team All-NBA selection in 2007.

Already this season, Dwight became the first player ever in league history to win the Defensive Player of the Year three years in a row. Also, he finished second in the MVP voting, was named to the All-Defense first team, was the East’s leading-vote getter for the NBA All-Star Game and won the East’s Player of the Week award a league-high six times.

Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Kevin Durant joined Dwight on the first-team squad. James was the only unanimous choice, while Dwight and Rose were one vote shy of being unanimous selections.

Dwyane Wade, Dirk Nowitzki, Pau Gasol, Russell Westbrook and Amare Stoudemire were second-team selections.

Chris Paul, Manu Ginobili, Al Horford, Zach Randolph and LaMarcus Aldridge composed the third-team All-NBA squad.

Dwight averaged a career-best 22.9 points this season, while continuing to be the game’s most fearsome defensive player. He ranked second in the NBA in rebounding (14.1), fourth in blocked shots (2.38) and 19th in steals (1.38). He also finished first in the league in double-doubles (66) and second in field goal percentage (59.3 percent).
